The craft

How a mochila is made

A mochila is not an off-the-shelf product. It is the result of days of patient handwork — and a tradition passed down across generations.

The pattern
01

The thread

The weaver chooses the colours and begins at the base of the bag, working from the centre outward.

02

The pattern

Row by row the kaana takes shape — a geometric figure that carries a meaning.

03

The strap

Finally the gaza strap is braided and sewn to the body.

Kaanela in plain terms

Fair, for us, means direct.

Many tell the story of fair craft. We're building a business that can prove it — step by step, and we'll show you honestly where we stand.

  1. 01

Every bag is a one-of-a-kind piece from La Guajira — woven by Wayuu women and sourced through a direct partnership with a local partner in La Guajira.

  2. 02

Fair pay is our commitment: we source directly on the ground and aim to negotiate as equals — not dictated by the world market.

  3. 03

We hold ourselves to the ten principles of fair trade (WFTO) and are working toward membership — a commitment we hold ourselves to.

About Kaanela

Woven by the Wayuu, carried to Europe

The Wayuu weavers design and weave every mochila themselves — their hand, their patterns. We only hold to shared standards of quality and a palette we love, and to a fairness we hold ourselves to. We are small, direct and transparent — sourcing in La Guajira through a local partner on the ground, without long middleman chains.
